Since moving to South Korea, keeping in-touch with family on a frequent occasion has become more challenging. There are texts exchanged every now and then to check up on each other but they're as personal as "missing you" and "hey, hope you're ok" gets. Being 11 hours ahead doesn't help with our channel of communication either but I know that once this "adjustment" period is over, communication will run a lot smoother.  I truly miss my family and it hurt that my brother married this past Sunday and I wasn't even able to talk to him. All I am now is just Facebook pictures away from the reality of the life at home I am missing out on. Don't get me wrong, I love being in Korea and I wouldn't change this decision ever but then there are days like today when I'm not feeling my best and in excruciating pain, wishing on the comfort of a sister's touch, a mother's home cooked meal, or a father's terrible joke to take my mind off of the pain. I will admit that, even in the midst of what feels like isolation, I do find comfort in knowing that great things are happening in the lives of those that I love.....
So to my brother and his beautiful wife, congrats for tying the knot this past weekend and wishing you many more years of what you've already been experiencing,  happiness and true Joy. I'll be able to have my glass of wine in dedication to you in two weeks! Cheers...

Cheerleader

My mom has recently been my biggest cheerleader in life. She has been fully supportive of me and the accomplishments that I have made thus far. There are many things that I have done that she didn't always agree with or fully understand but remained supportive as long they were positive and contributed to my happiness. No she was not the kind of mom that came to any of my track or cross country meets but she was the kind of mom that was there when I suffered from an episode of depression in high school and held me when I would cry over my battle with chronic constipation. So yes, she wasn't always there to cheer me on during my best but she was always there to comfort me during my worst. Now it's my turn to be supportive and become her cheerleader as I help her through this journey to a healthier lifestyle. This is her worst in regards to her health. I know the struggles of being overweight and the dangers that come with them if her weight persists uphill. We started jogging yesterday and I was proud of her motivation. Today we jogged the same path and she shed 6 minutes off her time and it made me realize how much alike we are. She is a not a quitter when her mind is made up, she fought through and pushed past her limits. With only a few months left before I leave the country, I am 100% dedicated and committed to her and her personal health goals. She is ready for change and that's the best place to start.Who are you cheering on today? Who are you making happy aside from yourself? Don't forget about lending people a hand especially those that have repeatedly lent theirs to you when you weren't always your very best.

 Sunday Mornings in the 90's

I can still go back to that time as if it were just yesterday. I can still smell the breakfast in the air, eggs, bacon, sausage, and toast. This was an indication of a good Sunday because not only is sausage on the menu but so is Sade is playing in the background, starting the day off filled with love. This was my mother's favorite artist and no one could put her in a better mood than Sade could. "No Ordinary Love" is a song that brings back wonderful childhood memories of growing up in Tanzania. Family is no ordinary love. We don't get to pick our family and it's the one thing in life that we all wish to belong to. The kind of love my mother displayed and continues to display for us is the kind of love that will always be true and simply unconditional. Family is precious and if you belong to a good one, don't take it for granted. There are others who have no family to share their dreams, goals, successes, failures, and experiences with. Lonely souls wandering without a family, a void that no friend or companion can ever fill.
